We enjoyed a great Family Home Evening this week visiting with Taylor and Billy, and other family and friends. Five years ago Taylor was our foster daughter for about a year. She was then adopted by a terrific family along with her brother Billy and they now live in Georgia. We haven't seen them in several years, so needless to say it was wonderful to see them and catch up. They are both amazing and doing such great things with their lives!

Candland Family Cookout

This weekend we had our annual family cookout. We enjoyed roasting hot dogs over the fire, train rides (thanks to our good neighbors), and even a movie with unlimited access to popcorn, candy, soda, and hot chocolate. My kids ate until they were sick! We had a great time and love being with family!

My Favorite Missionaries!

It's been awhile and I have alot of catching up to do, but I thought that I might as well start with my favorite missionaries. They will actually be home in just 2 weeks. I never thought that 18 months would go so quickly! We have certainly missed them, but the blessings that have come to our family through their service and example have been unmeasurable. Their dedication and desire to serve the Lord has overwhelmed me with gratitude for good parents. They have grown to love the Filipino people and I know they will miss them! I know from experience how hard it can be to leave the people that you have grown to love through missionary service.

I think that they have had a taste of Heaven on Earth!

Halloween

Grant and Porter had a great time dressing up this year. I have finally relaxed a bit and let them wear whatever the wanted. About 10 minutes before our trunk or treat party, Grant decided to forgo the costume we bought for Halloween (fireman costume...probably because he had already been wearing it for the past 2 weeks) The Dracula costume pulled out of the box looked much more fun. Drew had fun spray painting his hair and Tucker did his makeup. I hardly recognized him!

There was a costume change for each event, preschool, playgroup, trick or treat and trunk or treat!

The Deer Hunt

"The Draw" results are always exciting at the Candland home. Now that there are 4 certified hunters in the family (I don't count myself in that category...maybe someday, 4 is enough). There were lots of cheers when all three boys drew a buck tag!

Fun at the Beach

It sure looked fun...actually it was for the first 20 minutes or so of our 60 minute rental. It takes alot of power to haul 7 people around!

Tucker and Drew loved to skim board and became quite good by the end of the trip.

Grant preferred to spend his time in the sand. In fact, I don't think that he even set foot in the water. Maybe next time.

We have never taken all of our kids to the beach before and thought it was about time. We absolutely loved it.

When the temperature was around 110 degrees in Phoenix, we had to wear our jackets at night in San Diego. It was a great escape from the heat!

After church we stopped by the gorgeous San Diego Temple.

The Mormon Battalion Museum in Old Town San Diego was a hit. We highly recommend it!

Happy Birthday Boys!

During the last few months we have celebrated several birthdays, starting with Drew. Drew turned 10 in August.

Followed by Tucker 2 days later. He celebrated his 12th Birthday.

Porter turned 7 in September and had great time bowling for his birthday.

Hayden turned 15 in October and we enjoyed a perfect evening out in the desert for dinner and quad riding. It is hard to believe that they are all growing up so fast! I couldn't ask for better boys...I love them all!!

Eagle Court of Honor

First Day of School

Yes, I realize that it is nearly Thanksgiving, but I need to record a few of the highlights in the past months. Hayden is in 9th grade...high school...this year. He is really enjoying his classes and new school and doesn't even mind the uniform. (one less worry in the morning about what to wear)

Don't these three look excited to be starting school again. Maybe it's just the idea of getting their picture taken. Tucker is in 6th grade, Drew is in 4th and Porter 1st.

Grant could hardly wait to begin preschool and the other boys agree, it doesn't get any better than preschool. He has a terrific teacher and lots of friends in his class.

One terrific Summer!

This really has been one terrific summer. I would have never guessed given the stress and anxiety I was feeling about mid-May, thinking of the long, HOT, summer ahead with 5 active boys. However, I have thoroughly enjoyed it and I am getting a little possesive about sending them back to school (but not enough to home school). I am also going to miss all the help that they have been to me - my house is usually clean by 10am - alot quicker with 6 of us than just one! Playing with friends is always good incentive. This week we even thoroughly cleaned out all their bedrooms. Wow, I didn't know we had collected so much junk! We have also turned the yardwork over to them. The first week looked like a bad haircut, but each week it seems to improve a little more. Jamie appreciates it most as it doesn't consume his entire saturday and we all get more time together.

It looks like our lazy summer days are coming to an end. Here are some things that I will miss the most...

the peace and quiet in the morning hours that sometimes lasts until 9am.
dodge ball games
late movies together and carrying the little ones to bed
monsoons that bring out the tadpoles, then frogs - suddenly we have dozens of new pets
scorpion hunting
friday family swim days
diamondback games
weekend getaways to cooler weather
summer haircuts and the smell of sunscreen
reading a book by the pool, while they wear themselves out swimming

I will have to remember this next year when the school year comes to a close and the summer anxiety sets it.

Sunrise

We took the chair lift up to the top on Sunrise for the archery shoot out. There were targets set up all the way down the mountain.

Jett and Grant brought their guns to shoot the targets.

Jamie, Porter, Sheri and Grant, Drew and Tucker stayed to play with cousins.

It was a beautiful day and it felt good to escape the heat for a few days. Tucker added a bit of adventure later that evening. As we were getting ready for a BBQ and then the Rodeo, he fell and cracked his head open. We made a trip to the hospital in Showlow where our good friend Ian Brimhall is a surgeon. He sewed him up and we made it back in time for the fireworks! It has healed up perfectly and there is no trace of a scar - Thanks Ian!

Small towns are the best for Patriotic celebrations! Taylor somehow came up with a very unique tradition that my kids really enjoy. They start about 4am and light gunpowder? under an anvil (a big metal thing) to launch it into the air. They proceed through the entire town until everyone is awake and most are following the procession.

We also enjoy the "big race"!

The never ending hike to Grass Lake

We decided to try a new fishing spot on top of the mountain. So we drove up as far as we could and packed our poles and starting hiking. After about a mile of hiking, nearly straight up, we realized we must be off the trail. Jamie went off to explore and came back about 20 minutes later and said (much to the boys dismay) it is just over the hill. We did eventually make it and it was worth the view. It was absolutely serene and beautiful. I didn't catch many fish on this trip, but I did make it through a couple of good books.

We felt like we were on top of the world. The views were amazing and the pictures don't do it justice.

This has to be my favorite picture of the trip! After a long day of hiking, they are still smiling. (Grant's is a little bigger than his Dad's)

We chose to hike to the upper falls this year. It is a fairly easy hike and the swimming is good if you can brave that first jump...it is freezing!

then we cook them over an open fire on the mountain (notice the jackets - it was 50 degrees) and we all agreed it was the most delicious meal ever. It doesn't get any fresher than that! You can't see them in the picture, but there were over 20 deer in the trees around us grazing, as we ate.

This is a perfect picnic spot and it used to be one of the best fishing spots around. We found out on this trip that the lake was poisoned to kill all the trout, so that the "native colorado cutthroat" could be replanted. I don't think it will ever be the same.

This is the view that we always look for as we come off the winding mountain road and drop down to the beautiful little valley of Boulder, Utah. I still look forward to going as much today as when I was 8 years old going to visit Grandma and Grandpa Church!

Calf Creek

We went on our own hike up calf creek (not the 6 mile hike to the falls that we did last year). It was shaded and leisurely and not too long...perfect for a 4 year old.

I had to get this picture, as it could be the only one of it's kind. If you know Jamie's Dad he is rarely seen without a soda cup in his hand and never in my life have I seen him take a drink of water. Not too bad, is it Dad?!

We always look forward to our annual trip to Boulder, Utah. The fishing is always amazing. We arrived just before dark and decided to fish in our reliable spot...we weren't disappointed! Jamie's parents came with us this year, which made for a perfect trip!

Porter absolutely loves swim team! He has been asking me about sign ups since Christmas. The day of practices finally came and then his favorite... the races. He had to get the speedo, because of course that will help him swim faster. Freestyle was the first race and he got off to a great start and swam so hard, but when it was time to take a breath, he couldn't resist seeing where everyone else was. So after a few glances to all the lanes, he put his head in and swam hard. This went a few times, and he still ended up in second - he was thrilled! The ribbon collection begins...

Benjamin Franklin

Let me introduce you to Benjamin Franklin! (It may be hard to recognize him without the gray wig and glasses - Tucker opted not to wear them. We were lucky to get his pants rolled up) For his 5 grade Famous American project Tucker chose Benjamin Franklin. Their class worked for several weeks compiling all the information and this week we were able to attend their open house. What a great job they did!

It's Official...

Hayden is a full fledged Eagle Scout - YEAH! Last night we attended his Board of Review, which is the final step in obtaining his rank as Eagle. After writing up the details of his project and pictures, he submitted his paperwork, along with all of his merit badges, in a nice binder. He was assigned to a board of 3, who reviewed his project and discussed it with him. He came out with a huge smile and we knew that he had succeeded!

There were 11 other candidates, 3 of whom were from our ward. Kacy Frey, Hayden, and Bryce Dahl.

You did a terrific job Hayden and we are so proud to be your parents!

We thank Uncle Spencer and Pappa Bill for coming in Hayden's behalf to sit on another candidate's board of review.

Our 12 hour Camping Trip

Yes, by the time we set up the tent it was 9pm and then we were packed and driving home by 9am. However, it was one of the best camping trips ever (except that I forgot my camera)!

It started Friday afternoon, when I found a great tent on craig's list for the Father and Son's outing next weekend. Jamie suggested that we try it out this weekend. He was planning to take the boys Turkey Hunting one last time anyway. Grant was absolutely thrilled! Every time the big boys go hunting he packs his bag. Within 2 hours we were on the road. We stopped in Payson for dinner and then on to our campsite. The tent was perfect and we set it up in 10 minutes in the dark. It fits all of us (including our dog Jack) very comfortably. We had a campfire and cooked some s'mores, and went to bed. Hayden and Jamie got up early and went hunting. By the time they returned we had eaten breakfast and we were almost packed up. We had to hurry home to a Temple Sealing. We pulled in the driveway with enough time to shower and get to the Temple on time. When we returned the boys had unloaded the car and finished their chores. I think I could do that again!

Gila Valley Temple and Triathlon

Sometimes plans don't always work out the way we think. Last week I had everything arranged to go to Utah for Women's Conference at BYU, but for some reason, which I will probably never know, I wasn't supposed to go. I am grateful to a great friend for understanding and respecting my feelings. It was a tough decision to make as I had everything arranged and I had really been looking forward to a fun break.

Jamie and Hayden were already planning on going to Safford for a triathlon, and not wanting to stay home alone all weekend, we decided to join them. The new Gila Valley Temple was just completed and we were able to take all the boys to the open house. (Hayden is not with us because he was with his young men's group)

It was a beautiful temple with so many special touches unique to the Gila Valley. The members' in that area have waited a long time and they seem to be so appreciative of having a temple built for them. We unanimously decided that we liked the Celestial room the very best. It felt like stepping into Heaven, especially with all of my family around me. I know why my parents never tire of serving in the temple, even those 12 hour days!

The next morning we got up early and headed to the Pima Community Pool to watch the first leg of the Triathlon (it is sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America). We took note of the temperature reading in the car, 47 degrees. By the way, the pool was not heated! They started with 3 laps in the pool, then got on their bikes and rode 6 miles (mostly uphill), and finished by running 2 miles. Hayden and Jamie did amazing! They came with in a minute of each other.

This is the group that did the triathlon. It was so fun to see all of them cheering each other on. They are a great bunch of boys!!

Happy Birthday Grant!

How can it be our baby is now 4 years old?! Grant is a sweet, yet spunky little boy who thinks he can do anything his brothers can (and usually does). He is our entertainer and always has something to say that makes us smile. Fortunately he still loves to hug, snuggle and give kisses. He is my little pal during the day and although he is not crazy about long bike rides or shopping, he will still come along! We all love you Grant!

We shopped online for bikes because I knew if we went to the store he would get on one and never get off, looking would not be an option. He spotted this green bike and that was it - he told everyone that is all he wanted.

He chose to celebrate at Peter Piper Pizza with just our family (actually that was the only option presented to him, why did it take until #5 to learn this - keep it simple while they are young). Sandi joined us too and we had a great time!

This was his favorite part and we relit the candles over and over at Grant's request until there was nothing left of them.

Easter

No rain - in fact it was sunny and perfect after the forecast almost changed our plans

Easter Pageant

A couple of nights ago we went to the Easter Pageant with our Hastings’ Family. Even my sister Shannon and her kids were in town and joined us. We sure missed our missionary parents, but I spoke to them today and they said that they were so happy to know that we all were there together. It has become my favorite Easter tradition. Before the pageant began the performers came into the audience and of course my boys were drawn to the soldiers.
Just after the pageant began Grant whispered to me, “I am afraid I am going to like this”. He certainly did! It moved very quickly to hold his attention and beautifully portrayed the life of Jesus Christ. How grateful I am for my Savior. I know he lives. As I looked down the aisle at my children intently watching, I knew they felt the same. There is nothing more important to me! What a great way to begin the Easter Season.

Lehi Days Rodeo

A couple of weeks ago we went to the Lehi Days Rodeo. I always enjoy it because of the good memories I have from my childhood. As you can see Porter and Grant were sucessful in the chicken chase.

They named their chicks Nacho and Choncho. We enjoyed them for a week and then gave them to our good neighbors who have a real place for them.

Grant wasn't interested in Mickey or Minnie Mouse, or Goofy or Donald Duck, but when he saw Winnie the Pooh, his face lit up! He would have waited all day to see him. Thankfully it was a short line and Grant couldn't have been happier. He talked about it the rest of the day.

DISNEYLAND

It has been awhile since I have posted anything. I have had some technical problems that I haven't been able to fix - so I am soliciting some help to update my blog. But in the meantime, before I get too far behind, I will post some of our latest adventures. A couple of weeks ago we surprised our kids with a trip to Disneyland. I think it was as much fun for Jamie and I as the kids. We secretly packed their bags and loaded the car. They didn't know until we were headed out of town. Tucker doesn't appreciate surprises much after we picked them up at school one time and took them to get shots. I don't know if he will ever forgive us. It turned out to be a perfect trip. The weather was beautiful and there were no crowds, but the company was the best.

Porter, Grant and I spent some time on the merry go round while the rest rode the roller coasters.

One of the BEST parts of our trip was that Gramma and Pappa came with us! They are so much fun to be with and the boys adore them. Ask Dad about his new nickname (Apollo Ono).

Dress up

Grant came in wearing this yesterday.

Today, on the way home from Gramma Bev's house where he had been looking at all of her nativity scenes, he said that he wanted a Jesus costume. I told him that he could dress up in a couple of weeks when we have our own nativity, but he was insistent. I knew all that scrap material would be good for something someday - and no sewing needed. Kids sure make Christmas fun!!

A day of service

For Hayden's Eagle project he decided to help with Christmas for the Phoenix Children's Homeless Shelter. He organized a day of service to make 25 fleece blankets and knitted hats. We thank everyone who came to help!

He is also working on a toy drive through an elementary school, but thanks to many we already have nearly 1/3 of his goal.

We also have 7 knitted caps and several others in the making!

Turkey Day!

Our boys have had the unique opportunity to raise their own turkeys. For the past six months they have taken full responsibililty for feeding and caring for 6 turkeys. It has been a great learning experience for all of us! Well, yesterday was Turkey day at our house - I will not go into detail. I know that you are wondering...but these are the boys pets. Lets just say that turkeys are not lovable pets that create an attachment. (Hayden is hugging this turkey just so he won't reach around and peck him.) We did keep two. One is a hen who has laid seven eggs and is sitting on them. We will see what happens, we may be in the turkey raising business.

Porter lost a tooth

After weeks of checking the wiggly tooth and complaining that it hurt sooo bad - one yank with the pliers and out it came! No more pain and he can even eat apples again. When it came time to put it under his pillow, he did question the reality of the tooth fairy, but gave it a try anyway.

It took awhile to carve four pumpkins and everyone took a turn with the knives. We are just glad we didn't loose any fingers. Porter, cousin Brooke and Grant showing off the end results

I was a bit of a scrooge this year and told the boys that we won't be going costume shopping. They got creative and dug through the halloween box and came up with a new costume for each event we attended. Grant loved it and he dressed in something new every day . (I am glad the halloween box is now packed away.)

This was the main reason for our trip north. Hayden got a cow elk tag (yes, this is a female elk, not a horse) near Heber. He and Jamie had an exciting hunt which was sucessful. They alway feel good when they know that they are providing for our family. What would we do without them?! We have over 100 pounds of meat at the processor. Those of you who like elk meat - give us a call! I think I will be doing alot of canning soon.

Fall Break

We went to Pinetop for the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful fall scenery and weather.

While there we discovered that the Alder's were staying a few minutes away. They took us on a wild ride to a scenic lookout. It was one of the highlights of our trip. Thanks Alder's!!

Biz Town with Tucker

Earlier this week, I went on a field trip with Tucker to Biz Town. It is a program sponsored and run by Junior Achievement and his 5th grade class has been studying and preparing for it for several weeks. Before coming, each student selected a job and interviewed for it, they opened a bank account and were given a check book. Parent volunteers arrived an hour early for training, so we were somewhat prepared when the students came. Biz Town is set up with Town Hall at the head, city streets and all different businesses lining the streets. (Pappa Johns Pizza - where they ate lunch, radio/TV station, Allstate insurance, UPS Store, D-Backs Team Shop, Bank, Best Buy, etc.) Each business had to start by taking out a business loan from the bank and set prices on their merchandise. Each employee had specific responsibilities (ie. the CEO had to make a speech at the town meeting and supervise employees, and CFO's had to input all credits and debits, make deposits to the bank and cut payroll checks). All the employees got two breaks on a rotating schedule where they would receive a paycheck and make a deposit to the bank and then visit the other businesses. The 4 hours we had flew by and no one slowed down. We had a great time and I think that the kids all learned a little about "real life".

My friend JoLynn and I rode over together and worked together at UPS with 7 other 5th graders. Her daughter Brilynne has gone to school with Tucker since early kindergarten - what terrific friends they are!!

D-Back's sales manager was a great match for Tucker. With our money Tucker and I bought 4 tickets for next season. Thanks for inviting me Tucker - I loved being with you!

A day in Junior High...

Last week I was able to go with Hayden to 8th grade for "shadow a student day". It was so FUN!! We played softball in PE, had Orange Julius in cooking, played math games and did science experiments. It was much more fun than I remember Jr. High. However, Hayden was quick to remind me that this wasn't the norm, and that the teachers were also on their best behavior. I was just happy to spend some one on one time with my oldest - who is definitely the greatest kid in 8th grade!

I couldn't be more happy to be this little boy's mom. He is sweet and always has a smile and a twinkle in his eye. He also adds plenty of spice to our family and keeps us on the move (it is usually one of his brothers or dog Jack chasing him through the house - he is amost impossible to catch). Porter loves to be busy and all day kindergarten has been perfect for him. I adore him - Happy Birthday Port!!

I do not know where our kids get their love for and abililty to catch creatures (not from Jamie or I). They caught snakes, lizards, horny toads, spiders, and list goes on.

Each one had a buddy and were inseparable for the 4 days we spent together.

Our bonfire was so big we couldn't get close enough to cook our marshmellows and we even shed our jackets.

For Labor Day weekend we went with the Hatch's (my sister Shannon's family) to their family cabin in Colorado. It was the most perfect and relaxing weekend. The kids were in heaven spending time with cousins and enjoying the outdoors. We couldn't get enough of the cool weather. Needless to say it was hard to come home.

Courtney and Grant were the only ones brave enough to go for a swim. They didn't stay in long - the water was freezing!!

Today, August 31st is Tucker's 11th Birthday! He celebrated on Saturday by inviting some friends to the Lake to go wakeboarding and tubing. Thanks Uncle Sterling for bringing them back happy and safe!

Tucker is so fortunate to have such a good group of friends, most of which happen to be our neighbors. Tucker is just a great kid and we are fortunate to have him for a son. There is never a dull moment with Tucker because he likes to be involved. He is a hard worker and does his best in school! Most of all he is just FUN to have around! He has always melted his mom's heart with those big brown eyes and too often knows how to take advantage of that fact.

Saturday the 29th of August was Drew's 9th Birthday. While Jamie went off with Tucker's friends to the lake, I took Drew and his best friend Nick Slade to Sunsplash. We tried something new this year for birthdays. We gave them a set amount of money to keep for something they would like to buy or to use to throw themselves a party. It was interesting to see their choices, but they were both very happy!

I had a great time with these two cute boys. They had so much fun together! They were so considerate of each other and they were always asking each other, "what would you like to do now?' Drew is just a terrific kid. I don't know anyone more determined than he is. I still remember when he was 2 years old learning to ride his 2 wheeled bike with training wheels. He would not let me help him, as frustrated as he was, but he would also not give up. He finally did it and the smile on his face was worth it. He has been like that every since. He is quiet but confident. He is a true friend and has a great sense of humor. He always has something funny to share with me. We love you Drew!

HE IS STILL THE MAN OF MY DREAMS!! I couldn't ask for a better husband, friend or dad for my boys. I feel like the luckiest woman ever! We celebrated our anniversary last week and our plans to go on an exotic vacation turned into dinner at our favorite sushi resturant and then a movie. (I have been trying to scan the picture our friends at the resturant took with no luck) However, it couldn't have been any better - we were just happy to be alone together - which seems rare these days. I love you Jamie, and appreciate you more than you'll ever know!

That is what I was doing this morning and I panicked because I only counted 9, until I got a call from one mom saying that her son was sick. We had a blast making/floating boats, reading books, dressing up, eating snacks and playing in the water. Grant thought it was great that all his buddies got to come to his house for playgroup this week. Sorry you couldn't make it Mom and Dad - we missed you! (apparently I accidently copied them on our invitation for our playgroup - they sent their regrets from the Phillipines)

Now all my fun is over I will have 9 boring, lonely Friday mornings before it is my turn again - heehee!

Porter had a little accident at the primary swim party the other day. After racing around Uncle Shawn and Aunt Becky's pool all summer playing tag and jumping off the waterfall with no accidents, he slips getting into the pool and bangs a rock with his chin. First Day of School 2009

Hayden is headed to 8th grade. Only one more year of Jr. High...I'm not sure how I feel about that!

I am so happy that they have smiles on their faces, because their were not exactly happy that the summer had come to an end. Tucker is in 5th grade, Drew is in 3rd grade and Porter is in all day kindergarten. We all made it through our first week! I think I may have enjoyed it a little more than they did. Grant wanted to take a nap every day (he really did - he asked me and I was shocked after no naps all summer long!) and I got caught up on a few things and simply enjoyed a little peace and quiet. All of the boys have great teachers and we hope to be off to a great school year!

Porter has been very excited for his first day of kindergarten. We affectionately call Porter, "pig" or "piglet" (he is going to love that someday). As we were all getting ready the phrase "dig the pig" came up. Mrs. Willem's, all the chics, his friends and all of Sonoma Ranch will DIG the PIG!!

Nashville

I am a week late with this post, but I actually found a few peaceful moments to make an update. I know that it won't last long... Last week Jamie and I had a wonderful trip to Nashville, TN. (unfortuately I forgot my camera) Jamie was attending a conference for work and I tagged along for a couple of days. I listened to Jamie's presentation on "Green Counties" (I had no idea my husband was so knowledgable about solar power and recycling - he did a great job!). We also went to the Grand Ole' Opry, being a country girl - I loved it! It is amazing what a few days alone can do. I came back rejuvinated! A HUGE THANKS to Aunts and Uncles who entertained, spoiled and referee'd our boys. They enjoyed their time away as much as we did!

WEEDS, WEEDS, WEEDS...

This is another fun way that we are spending our summer. Can you tell how much they are enjoying it by the look on their faces?! They started with lots of enthusiam and got up at 5:30am for the first few days. Then it got to be 6am then 7am. We then began working after dinner until dark. This is Grandma and Grandpa Hastings' pasture near their house. Uncle Spencer asked the boys if they would pull the weeds so that the horses could graze and they were happy to help. It has turned out to be a big project and a great work experience. I remember similar experiences from my own childhood, and the same nasty, thorny weeds!

It's hard to believe that my parents are half way around the world on a mission. They are serving in the Manila, Philippines Temple and having a wonderful experience. Our family has felt the blessings of their service from the time they left. Just to see their desire to serve has been an example to all of us. We love hearing of their experiences, such as; the missionaries from Mongolia that came through the temple for the first time, the couple from India that saved all they had to come to the Manila Temple to be married, the humble members in the ward they attend. Thanks Mom and Dad - we sure miss you but we wouldn't want you to be anywhere else!

This was the obstacle course that the boys waited in line for an hour to run through. After all that waiting I missed everyone but Tucker and Jake.

It took some convincing but Porter took the plunge too.

When we left they were all saying how much fun they had and one of them asked me if I enjoyed it. I told them I loved watching them have fun and I reminded them how much I love them to bring them to this once in a lifetime experience (literally, unless Jamie takes them back.) It was 115 degrees today - whew! By the way, all the clothes, shoes and socks are in the dumpster.

A Perfect Birthday!

This really was a perfect birthday. I would have turned 40 years ago if I would have known how fun it would be!! We took the boys and stayed in a resort for a couple of days. The boys surprised me when we came home from dinner one night with this birthday banner and 40 post it notes stuck all over the room with nice things written on them. Then my sweet husband took me to see "Wicked". I enjoyed it far more than he did - but he was a good sport! The next morning my sisters and my friends surprised me for breakfast. I am overwhelmed with gratitude for such thoughtful family and friends - I love you all!!

Monday we went with Sterling, Sandi and a few of their friends to the lake. I have been trying to get the pictures from my cell phone on our blog with no luck. All the boys had some wild tube rides. Hayden did well wakeboarding. Porter even got to wakeboard with Uncle Sterling who hoisted him up on his shoulders. You should have seen Porter's face - it was a mix of terror and excitement! All in all it was a perfect day at the Lake. A great way to enjoy another 110 degree day in Arizona!!

Our last night we decide to fish for dinner, even though we already had a freezer full. It took us longer than usual and we were all starved by the time the fish were cleaned and on the fire. It tasted DELICIOUS!! It was beautiful but cold up on the mountain and we went "hunting" for deer and elk before heading home. What a great way to end a fun week in Boulder!

We are sure missing our traditional Lake Powell trip with the Hastings' Family. However, we felt like we were at Lake Powell without the water in this canyon. There were plenty of rocks to climbs, red rock cliffs and lots of Lizards!

We explored some new places and found this beautiful canyon not far from Boulder up the Burr Trail. The boys enjoyed climbing and exploring. I should say all but Grant. He liked to have his feet firmly planted on the ground. They also caught plenty of lizards and we even brought home 3 snakes!

My brother Spencer and his wife Molly came with us for the first few days. It was so fun to have them! We relived our trip a year ago as they had just started dating. Now they are happily married and expecting their first baby. Boulder sealed the deal for them!

it was worth it!! It was breathtaking and the water was so cold it took your breath away. The boys spent almost an hour wading in the water, catching fish and having water fights. The hike down was much easier except Grant still preferred Dad's shoulders to walking.

Hike to Calf Creek Falls

This is the begining of our hike to Calf Creek Falls. One which we thought would take less than an hour and ended up taking nearly 4 hours. We found out half way into the hike that it was 6 miles roundtrip. We thought twice about turning back, particularly Jamie who had been carrying Grant on his shoulders the entire way. Thankfully we kept on trekking! It wasn't easy with a 5 year old who would get tired and lie down in the middle of the trail or a 3 year old who preferred the view from Dad's shoulders. The three oldest did terrific and we could hardly keep up with Tucker who led the way.
